Bio

Brent Winter, one of the Arena Football League's top assistant coaches, is in his fifth year with the Los Angeles Avengers.  As head coach Ed Hodgkiss' right-hand man, he has many duties with the team, serving as assistant head coach, player personnel director, special teams coordinator and wide receiver coach.

Since joining the club, Winter has helped the Avengers advance into the AFL Playoffs in each season, including last year's incredible run to the Western Division title.

A long-time friend of Hodgkiss and an experienced AFL veteran, Winter came to the Avengers after spending the 2001 season with the Chicago Rush as player personnel director and special teams coordinator.  He previously spent two years (1999-2000) as the assistant player personnel director, special teams coordinator and fullback-linebacker coach for the New England Sea Wolves.

In 1997, Winter began his AFL coaching career with a two-year internship as an offensive coach for the Albany Firebirds.  Prior to that, he was an offensive and special teams coach at Allegheny High School (Covington, Va.) for three seasons (1995-97), after serving as running backs coach (1994) and offensive coordinator (1995) at Montgomery Junior College (Rockville, Md.).

Winter kicked off his coaching career in 1991 with three seasons as the special teams coordinator at Fairmont State College (Fairmont, W.Va.), where he received a bachelor's degree in marketing and management in 1990.  At Fairmont State, Winter also played quarterback on the football team.  He went on to earn a master's degree in education from West Virginia University (Morgantown, W.Va.) in 1993.

Hodgkiss and Winter first met at Fairmont State in 1992, when Winter was the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, while Hodgkiss tutored the wide receivers.  They went on to coach together at Montgomery Junior College (Hodgkiss was the offensive coordinator as Winter worked with the running backs and special teams) in 1994.  Three years later, they were reunited in Albany for two seasons (1997-98), when Hodgkiss was the Firebirds' wide receiver and special teams coach.

Born on April 1, 1968, Winter is a native of Ripley, W.Va.  He resides in Redondo Beach, Calif.
